He designed the metal lid that could screw on glass jars and made it possible to preserve food in the jars.

There are three parts in the canning Mason jars. The first part is the glass jar. There are typically two styles of jar, which are regular and widemouth. Usually, the glass jars are clear, but there are also colored versions. Aqua is very common color but you can find jars in nearly any color. Some people even collect antique Mason jars and the colored jars are the most valuable because they’re rare.

The metal screw-on ring is the second part of the Mason jar. It is not that important and some experienced canners can store their jars without the rings. The ring is there only to protect the center portion from knocking off and it isn’t responsible for sealing the jar. Or if the seal breaks, the ring will prevent the contents of the jar going all over the place.

The third part of the Mason jar is the center cap. This metal center cap has kind of a rubber sealing compound, which has a sealing function and keeps the food fresh for a long time. So, this piece is what seals the jar and the metal ring is only for center lid protection. Many people get rid of the ring while storing because it might hide a bad seal and they also tend to corrode. When you store your canning jars without the ring, you can quickly define if the seal is bad.
