There are a lot of coffee lovers among us. What can be superior that a fresh and aromatic cup of coffee in the morning. But as for the proper coffee storage, there could be a little confusion. We know that fresh roasted coffee should avoid light, heat and moisture. If you store your coffee taking into account those factors it will keep it fresh longer. So you should place your coffee in an airtight container and store it in a dark, cool and dry place.
Freezer isn’t the best place for coffee, as many think. Although it is cool and dark it is not its ideal environment. If it was the best place for storing coffee then we would have found supermarket coffee in the frozen food section. The reason the freezer isn’t the best place for coffee storage is because coffee is porous. That’s the feature that allows us to make flavored coffee with the help of oils and syrups. When stored in the freezer, coffee can absorb the moisture and flavors from it. The moisture will damage the natural quality of the coffee and your pricy gourmet coffee will have the taste of you freezer.
Another reason why coffee shouldn’t be stored in the freezer is the oils and flavors contained in it. These oils and flavors released during the roasting process give that wonderful taste and aroma to our coffee. And the freezing process will destroy the oils and the coffee flavor. So avoid storing coffee in the freezer. Only one exception to coffee freezing is that if you’ve too much of fresh grounded coffee and you will never use it within two weeks you can freeze your coffee but following some requirements. First of all, if you take the coffee out of the freezer never put it back again. And second of all, keep the moisture out. If you have a huge bag of coffee, divide it into small weekly portions. Wrap them up in sealable freezer bags and plastic wrap. When you remove a small portion of the coffee from the freezer, store it in a dry place like pantry in an airtight package.
For the same reasons we should never put our coffee in the fridge either. It is an excellent way to ruin a good coffee.
Other myth of handling coffee is that it all should be grinded before usage or storage. If you want the best tasting coffee you should grind it right before usage. Because no matter how you store ground coffee it will go stale a lot faster. A vacuum sealed packaging for ground coffee is not the best either. Before packing ground coffee into the vacuum sealed package it must sit for a couple of days in order to release all the CO2 gas it contains after grinding or the bag will burst. Valve-sealed bags are superior for packaging and shipping coffee. The valve allows the CO2 gas to escape but it doesn’t let the moisture and oxygen in the bag so the coffee could be packaged and shipped fresh.
